Chick-fil-A

Let me begin with a declaration: I have for years been a faithful fan of Chick-fil-A.  They make a great chicken sandwich, the staff is friendly, and they always say “My Pleasure”.  That having been said, I am at the very least, disappointed  in the recent statements made by the company's Chief Operating Officer.

The conventional wisdom seems to be, Dan Cathy has the right to say anything he wants, it’s a free country.  I disagree wholeheartedly.  There is some speech, mala in se, which is not protected.  One can’t yell fire in a crowded room.  Still other speech, while not illegal, is just offensive, and we, as Americans, just won’t tolerate it.  By example, when Dr. Laura Schlesinger went on her racist rant in August 2010, repeating the N word 16 times, America was outraged and in the aftermath the ‘doctor’ removed herself from terrestrial radio, in her words, get this, to regain her First Amendment rights.

Mr. Cathy’s comments have irreparably damaged Chick-fil-A’s brand name.  Ironically, because of his comments, we now know much more about the overbearing, interfering, self righteous, holier-than-thou practices of this fast food giant.  We now know he fired a woman to make her a stay at home mom.  We know that Chick-fil-A, has been sued at least 12 times since 1988 on charges of employment discrimination.  We now know that Chck-fil-A takes up to 65% of the profits of a franchise.  Most of all, I know that regretably, I’ve eaten my last Chick-fil-A sandwich.
